THE EFFECT OF ALLOXAN ON LIVER DNA OF THE RAT

1 Departments of Pharmacology and Anatomy, State University of New York, Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, N. Y.

The P32 turnover is reduced by 50 per cent in the total liver DNA of alloxan diabetic rats.

The DNA1 fraction is increased markedly in the liver of alloxan diabetic rats, while the DNA2 fraction remains constant.

The P32 uptake of DNA1 and DNA2 is reduced to the same extent in the liver of alloxan diabetic rats when studied on the 4th day after alloxan administration. In the period of time during which the DNA increase occurs following alloxan administration, significantly more p32 is taken up and retained by the liver DNA1 fraction of the diabetic rats than of controls. The DNA2 fractions do not differ in this respect.

The molar ratios of the bases of the total liver DNA of alloxan diabetic rats is the same as that of the controls.
