The action of adenosine on the electrocardiogram of the guinea pig has been described.
The atrio-ventricular block produced by adenosine on the guinea pig heart is increased by up to ten times by doses of ouabain which are otherwise without observable action.
With doses of ouabain just below the amount required to produce electrocardiogram abnormalities, adenosine precipitates such abnormalities. When a toxic dose of ouabain has been given, adenosine no longer has any observable action.
The findings have been discussed with reference to the inotropic and cardiotoxic effects of the cardiac glycosides.
