THE EFFECT OF NINE CARDIAC STEROIDS AND EPINEPHRINE ON THE RESPIRATION OF HEART MUSCLE SLICES

The effect of nine cardiac steroids and epinephrine on the respiration of cat ventricular slices has been studied.

In appropriate concentration, all of these steroids produced a sustained stimulation of respiration. The potency of these compounds to elicit the respiratory response varied greatly. A correlation is presented between the in vitro respiratory response and the in vivo cardio-toxic action of these compounds.

Whereas the cardiac glycosides produced respiratory stimulation of cat heart slices, epinephrine was without effect.
