DI-ETHYL ETHER ANALGESIA: A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE FIRST STAGE OF ETHER ANESTHESIA IN MAN

1. A detailed study of the first stage of anesthesia is described.

2. A plane of stage one (plane 3) has been used successfully in 115 consecutive patients undergoing major cardiac surgery.

3. Deleterious reflex activity has not been observed in stage I—plane 3 of ether anesthesia.

4. The stage of delirium is not seen, after the first stage of anesthesia has once been established, by the technique described.

5. A specific electroencephalographic pattern for ether analgesia (stage I— plane 3) has been defined.
