THE DIURETIC ACTIVITY OF ISOCYTOSINES

C. G. Van Arman 1

1 Division of Biological Research, G. D. Searle and Co., Chicago 80, Illinois

A series of 34 isocytosine compounds has been investigated for diuretic properties. Some conclusions on the relation of structure to activity are presented. SC-3858 is orally active in the rat at 5 mgm./kgm. and is approximately 360 times as potent as urea. It is only weakly active in the dog by the oral route. The effect on renal hemodynamics, if any, is a slight rise in filtration rate and renal blood flow. The mode of action seems to resemble that of xanthines.
