THE SIMULTANEOUS RECORDING OF OXYGEN UPTAKE AND CONTRACTION OF PAPILLARY MUSCLES AS AFFECTED BY L-EPINEPHRINE AND L-NOREPINEPHRINE

Kwang Soo Lee 1

1 Department of Pharmacology, Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa.

1. The previously described method allowing the simultaneous observation of oxygen consumption and the contraction of muscle was modified to increase the accuracy and to allow the application of drugs in freshly prepared solutions.

2. Both the oxygen consumption and the force of contraction of cat papillary muscle increased immediately following the administration of l-epinephrine and l-norepinephrine. This increase was of short duration.

3. These two drugs were indistinguishable in their effects on oxygen consumption, force of contraction and speed of action.
