1. Atropine sulfate had the following effects on intestinal motility stimulated by barium: a) no effect on intestinal strips in vitro; b) inhibitory effect in majority of tests on anesthetized dogs.
2. It is concluded that studies on the intestinal strip in vitro are not a reliable indicator for the effect of antispasmodic drugs in the whole animal.
3. The anesthetized dog offers certain advantages for the study of antispasmodic drugs on the gastro-intestinal tract. The method may show the following: a) the most effective route of administration of an antispasmodic; b) which organ responds most and which organ least; c) the effect of antispasmodics on distant organs when the drug is instilled into specific segments of the intestinal tract.
