THE EFFECT OF SODIUM DEHYDROCHOLATE UPON THE OXYGEN UPTAKE OF RAT TISSUES

L. L. Eisenbrandt 1 and L. S. Schanker 1

1 Department of Pharmacology, School of Pharmacy, The University of Kansas City, Kansas City, Missouri

The effect of sodium dehydrocholate upon the oxygen uptake of slices of rat liver, kidney, jejunum and cerebral cortex was studied in vitro using conventional manometric methods. The QO2 rates of the tissues were reduced as the concentration of sodium dehydrocholate in the substrate was increased. The two greater concentrations of drug, 0.047 M and 0.0047 M depressed all four tissues.

This was not true with 0.00047 M sodium dehydrocholate which did not affect liver slices. However, this concentration slightly (but not significantly) depressed slices of kidney and jejunum and significantly depressed cerebral cortex slices.
