ACTION OF ANALGESIC DRUGS (MORPHINE, MEPERIDINE, METHADONE) OX ROTATORY NYSTAGMUS IN THE RABBIT

V. G. Longo 1 and L. Napolitano 1

1 Laboratorio di Chimica Terapeutica, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Roma, Italy

1. The action of some analgesic drugs (morphine, meperidine, methadone) on the vestibulo-ocular reflex of the rabbit was studied.

2. The animal was placed on a turn-table and rotated at a rate of 360°/sec. The nystagmus during and following the rotation was registered by means of two needle-electrodes fixed at the outer canthi, and connected to an ink-writing oscillograph.

3. Morphine, meperidine and methadone are able to inhibit the amplitude of nystagmic response; these results are discussed in relation to the mechanism of action of analgesics in the central nervous system.

4. The method of observing the inhibition of the nystagmic response is proposed as a screening test for analgesics.
