1. In the anesthetized cat and dog, serotonin produced somewhat erratic effects on blood pressure.
2. Destruction of the vasomotor center in the dog by pithing through the cervical cord stabilized the blood pressure response to give serotourin about one-fourteenth of the pressor potency of l-epinephrine.
3. Serotonin is less affected by adrenergic blocking agents than are either l-epinephrine or l-norepinephrine.
4. Tachyphylaxis to the pressor effects occurs.
5. In addition to its vascular actions, serotonin has been shown to have constrictor or spasmogenic activity on the isolated bronchial tree, intestine and uterus and the intact intestine and bladder.
6. The agent is rapidly inactivated by amine oxidase.
7. Intravenous toxicity studies give LD50 values of 160 mgm./kgm. in mice and 30 mgm./kgm. in rats.
8. Possible roles of serotonin in the body are discussed.
