EXPERIMENTAL DIABETES PRODUCED BY 8-HYDROXYQUINOLINE

Mary A. Root 1 and K. K. Chen 1

1 The Lilly Research Laboratories, Eli Lilly and Company, Indianapolis 6, Indiana

1. Intravenous administration of 8-hydroxyquinoline produces pancreatic diabetes in a small percentage of rabbits but not in rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, cats or dogs.

2. Methylene blue administered intravenously immediately before the injection of 8-hydroxyquinoline increases the incidence of diabetes in rabbits.

3. 8-Hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid, 8-chloroquinoline and 8-methoxyquinoline have no diahetogenic action. A slight, transient hyperglycemia occurs with 2-hydioxyquinoline.

4. Diphenylthiocarbazone produces diabetes in rabbits if a large enough dose can be administered, but the low solubility of this compound makes it difficult to employ.
