Data have been presented of acute toxicity studies of meperidine in frogs' mice, rats, rabbits, cats and dogs. Chronic daily administration of meperidine to rats for sixty days and to rabbits for thirty days produced no deleterious effects.
Meperidine was administered orally in single daily doses to dogs and monkeys for a period of ten months. Although certain changes in the animals were observed during the period of medication, no withdrawal symptoms were observed when medication was stopped. Attempts to produce addiction by divided daily doses administered parenterally for shorter periods of time were likewise unsuccessful.
