THE EFFECT OF METHADONE ISOMERS, MORPHINE, AND PENTOBARBITAL ON THE BLOOD GLUCOSE OF DOGS

D. T. Watts 1

1 Department of Pharmacology, University of Virginia Medical School, Charlottesville, Virginia

1. The comparative effect of d- and l-methadone on the blood glucose of dogs has been investigated. At a dose of 3 mgm./kgm. the l-methadone increased the blood glucose 43.7 mgm. per cent whereas d-methadone produced an increase of only 12.6 mgm. per cent.

2. Sedative doses of pentobarbital partially inhibited the hyperglycemic response to l-methadone and morphine. Anesthetic doses of pentobarbital completely inhibited l-methadone hyperglycemia.
