1. The oxygen uptake of the rat's aorta is inhibited by sodium nitrite in therapeutic concentrations. This does not obtain with sodium nitrate.
2. The vasodilators, erythritol tetranitrate, octyl nitrite and amyl nitrite, do not interfere significantly with the oxygen uptake of arterial tissue in therapeutic levels. Glyceryl trinitrate does inhibit the oxygen uptake of arterial tissue.
3. The relationship between ATPase inhibition, oxygen uptake and vasodilation produced by the drugs of the nitrite-nitrate series is discussed.
