A comparison of the cholinergic blocking effects of alpha, alpha-diphenyl-gamma-dimethylaminovaleramide and of atropine has shown that:
1. BL 139 has qualitatively and quantitatively the same effects as atropine on salivation in man, mydriasis in rabbits, and on the depressor effects of acetylcholine on blood pressure in anesthetized dogs.
2. BL 139 is less potent than atropine as an antispasmodic on the isolated rabbit ileum, in blocking vagal slowing of the heart in unanesthetized dogs, and in causing mydriasis and cycloplegia in man.
3. Its duration of action is slightly shorter than that of atropine. The structure activity relationship of BL 139 and other potent cholinergic blocking agents is discussed.
