A toxic action of streptomycin on the auditory system occurs in the periphery at the end organ, reducing primarily the aural microphonic response. The effect differs from that of quinine, of anoxia and of exposure to loud sounds, which depress the response of the auditory nerve fibres before they affect the microphonic.
